ANIMAL SHELTERS
THE PROBLEM OF PET OVERPOPULATION
Animals are brought into animal shelters when surrendered by owners, abandoned, or found as strays. Those who are lucky are reclaimed by their owners or adopted. However, millions are euthanized annually due to health problems, behavioral issues, lack of resources, and space.
PROGRESS
Over time more awareness has been brought to this issue and the save rate of most shelters has increased drastically. In the city of LA, this number has increased from 57.7% in 2011 to 85.96% in 2017 for dogs and 36.3% in 2011 to 79.26% for cats according to the No-Kill Los Angles Shelter.
WHAT IS NO-KILL?
A no-kill shelter is defined as one with over 90% save rate and only euthanizes animals with terminal illnesses or dangerous behaviors. This means that animals are not killed for space, and every healthy adoptable animal is given a chance to find a home.
BE PART OF THE SOLUTION
Although improvements are being made in the animal shelter system, it is far from perfect. Countless animals still die needlessly because people choose to buy from breeders instead of adopting. Our goal at BARC is to decrease this number. You can help by choosing to adopt, raising awareness, and donating to or volunteering at shelters.
